About Shanai Restaurant & Party Hall

Located right in the center of Jackson Heights, Queens, Shanai Restaurant & Party Hall is a unique spot. It works as a large event space for weddings and parties, but it also operates as a regular restaurant serving traditional South Asian food. Although they label this restaurant as Bangladeshi, I do believe they also serve Indian and Pakistani dishes.

Because the food scene in Jackson Heights is so competitive, a restaurant has to be really good to survive. I decided to step inside to see if their everyday food was as grand as their building.

Why It Is Called a Party Hall

This place is called a party hall for a reason. When you look inside, you will see it has two levels: a ground floor and an upper floor.

The ground floor is where you sit down to have your lunch or dinner. The setup here is a casual cafeteria style, which reminded me a lot of the setup at Khalil Biryani House. However, the dining room at Shanai is much bigger and feels a bit more classy, featuring comfortable leather chairs and bright marble-patterned counters.

Incredibly spacious and comfortable—a rare luxury for dining layouts in this neighborhood.

Then, there is the upper floor. This balcony-like mezzanine area is designed specifically to host special events. It is a dedicated venue where people can celebrate birthdays, parties, engagements, or any special family occasion.

Right in the middle of the room hangs a massive, beautiful crystal chandelier. It gives the whole space a very festive and clean feel. Because it is so big, it is a great restaurant whether you want to eat a quick meal by yourself or bring a huge group of fifteen family members.

What We Ordered

To get a true baseline reading of the kitchen's spice profiles and execution, I wanted to wander across both the meat and vegetarian sides of the menu. My spread included:

  • Chicken Curry with Pulao Rice
  • Fish Curry
  • Goat Biryani
  • Mixed Vegetable Curry
  • Onion Fritters and Fried Eggplant

Chicken Curry with Pulao Rice: Pure Comfort

The opening act of the meal was a classic chicken curry paired with fragrant pulao rice. The chicken curry arrived beautifully perfumed and carried a gentle, warming heat that I personally found incredibly satisfying. The gravy had an immense depth of seasoning without leaning into that aggressive, blinding spice that masks the actual flavor of the meat. The chicken itself was remarkably tender and pulled away easily, melting right into the rice.

The pulao rice was fluffy, perfectly separated, and highly aromatic, making it the ultimate sponge for that rich curry gravy. Together, they formed an instantly comforting, soul-warming combination. This was easily a highlight of the afternoon and an item I would happily order on a return visit.

Fish Curry: A Masterclass in Balance

The fish curry ended up being an unexpected standout for me. I am always a little cautious with regional fish curries because it is remarkably easy for the kitchen to let a strong, overpowering fishy odor take over the entire profile. Here, however, the kitchen showcases real mastery; the gravy was exquisitely balanced, aromatic, and deeply savory.

The fish steaks were moist, meaty, and completely infused with the curry's spices. There were still a few traditional bones to navigate by hand, but honestly, I didn’t mind getting my fingers a little dirty when the food tasted this vibrant. Every single bite of the fish flesh drenched in that delicate sauce was an absolute joy.

Goat Biryani: The Undisputed Champion

If you only order one single item from Shanai, make it the Goat Biryani. The staff proudly recommended this dish the moment I sat down, and I am incredibly glad I took their advice. It is easily one of the best versions of biryani I have encountered in the neighborhood in quite some time.

The basmati rice was a gorgeous canvas of aromatics, offering a complex, layered blend of spices that felt complete all on its own without needing any extra condiments. Nestled inside were massive, incredibly tender chunks of goat meat that practically gave up at the mere sight of a fork.

I've had biryani from many restaurants over the years, and I would say this is a very good version. The seasoning was on point, and the dish felt complete on its own. If you want to see how it stacks up against another neighborhood favorite, check out my full review of the famous Chicken Biryani at Khalil Biryani House in Jackson Heights which is also a Bangladeshi Restaurant. However, if you're visiting Shanai for the first time, I still highly recommend ordering theirs.

Mixed Vegetable Curry: A Necessary Balance

Whenever I dive into a heavy, meat-forward South Asian feast, a meal never truly feels complete or structurally balanced without some greens on the table. To break up the rich profiles of the curries and rice, I ordered the mixed vegetable curry.

It was a light, simple, and clean preparation that came packed with properly cooked vegetables that thankfully still retained a bit of crunch and bite. While it certainly wasn't designed to be the most memorable or show-stopping plate of the meal, it executed its job beautifully, cutting through the intense richness of the goat and fish dishes perfectly. If you want a lighter intermission between heavy bites, it’s a highly reliable side option.

Onion Fritters and Fried Eggplant: Crispy Final Bites

To round out the entire experience, I sampled a side of their house onion fritters and fried eggplant. These are items that demand to be eaten the exact second they leave the kitchen fryers while they are still piping hot. The crunch was spectacular, delivering an incredibly satisfying, loud texture with every single bite.

The onion fritters carried a lovely, sweet-meets-savory flavor profile that works brilliantly as a quick snack, while the fried eggplant slices paired beautifully with the residual gravies left on my table. My only minor critique is that they leaned just a fraction too oily, but that is a highly common trait with authentic, fresh-fried street snacks. While they didn't quite eclipse the greatness of the biryani or fish curry, they were still a fun, texturally playful element to share.

Service

The staff were friendly and helpful, though not the absolute best I have encountered compared to most other restaurants. One thing I really appreciated was that they recommended the goat biryani, which ended up becoming my favorite dish of the meal. When a team actively champions a house dish because they genuinely believe in its quality, it always elevates the hospitality experience.

The ordering process was simple, and the food was served quickly without any issues. This fast service is because the food is already fully displayed right in front of you behind the counter, and the staff simply reheat it before serving it to your table.

Value for Money

Considering the quality of the food and the portion sizes, it is affordable which they offers good value for money. The dishes were flavorful, filling, and satisfying. If you're dining with family or friends, there are plenty of options to share.

My Final Thoughts

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Shanai Restaurant & Party Hall. The food was rich in spices and flavor, which is exactly what I look for when eating South Asian cuisine. My favorite dishes were the goat biryani, fish curry, and chicken curry although the Polao rice from Khalil Biryani House is better since they included boiled egg in the plate. Those three dishes stood out the most and are the items I would recommend ordering.

The mixed vegetable curry was a nice addition to balance the meal, while the onion fritters and fried eggplant were enjoyable as fresh snacks. If you're exploring Jackson Heights and looking for flavorful South Asian food, Shanai Restaurant & Party Hall is worth a visit.

Would I Come Back?

Yes. I would definitely return for the goat biryani, fish curry, and chicken curry. Those dishes alone are enough reason for me to come back and try more items from the menu.
