I also filmed my dinner at Sabry’s Seafood, from the complimentary sides to the huge Seafood Combo with fish, shrimp, scallops, and squid.

Why I Tried Sabry’s Seafood

Astoria is one of my favorite areas in Queens for exploring Middle Eastern and North African food, and Sabry’s Seafood stood out because its menu focuses heavily on seafood. It's also an Egyptian restaurant recommended by the MICHELIN Guide, so naturally, I wanted to see how good the food actually was.

I've tried other North African restaurants around Astoria as well. One of my favorites is Moroccan Bites by Siham, where I especially loved the Lamb with Prunes & Apricots. Sabry’s gave me a completely different experience because instead of Moroccan lamb dishes, I came here specifically for Egyptian seafood.

For my first visit, I decided to order the Seafood Combo. I thought it would be the easiest way to try several kinds of seafood at once—and I'm glad I did.

Atmosphere & Service

Don't come to Sabry’s expecting a fancy fine-dining seafood restaurant. The atmosphere is more casual and neighborhood-focused. The restaurant isn't huge, and the tables are fairly close together. During my visit, it was a little crowded with families, Middle Eastern customers, and local diners.

The restaurant has a simple but welcoming interior, along with nautical decorations that fit the seafood theme. I also liked that it felt like the kind of place where families could sit together and share several seafood dishes instead of having a formal dining experience.

The staff were fast and attentive. Even though the restaurant was busy, the service was good throughout my meal. The pace wasn't rushed either, so I had time to enjoy the sides before the main seafood arrived. For me, this is the type of restaurant I would visit with family or friends when I want a relaxed seafood dinner.

Location & How to Get There

  • Address: 24-25 Steinway St, Astoria, NY 11303

The location is probably my biggest inconvenience with this restaurant.

  • By Subway: Taking the R train to 46th Street leaves you with a 20-to-22-minute walk to Sabry’s. Personally, I think that's inconvenient, especially if you're specifically coming here for dinner.
  • By Car / Rideshare: Driving or taking an Uber or Lyft makes more sense. Just remember that street parking on Steinway Street can be difficult, so give yourself extra time during busy dinner hours.

The transportation isn't ideal, but I wouldn't let that stop me from returning.

What I Ate at Sabry’s Seafood

Before the main Seafood Combo arrived, our table already had several items to eat. This was one part of the experience I really appreciated because the meal felt complete rather than just being a plate of seafood by itself.

Green Salad & Olive Oil

First, we had a simple green salad with lettuce, cucumber, and tomato. It wasn't anything complicated, but I liked having something fresh on the side, especially since I was about to eat a large seafood meal. They also provided olive oil at the table to drizzle over the salad.

Fresh Pita Bread & Tahini

Bowl of creamy herb-flecked tahini dip with olive oil swirl

The fresh pita bread was one of the sides I really enjoyed. It was soft and delicious, and I liked dipping it into the tahini sauce. The tahini was creamy and paired nicely with the bread. Honestly, I could easily keep eating the pita and tahini while waiting for the seafood.

Brown Rice

We also received brown rice, which I personally liked because I enjoy eating rice with seafood. Once my Seafood Combo arrived, I could mix bites of the fish, shrimp, scallops, or squid with the rice instead of eating the seafood completely on its own.

Seafood Combo — The Highlight of My Dinner

Now for the main reason I came to Sabry’s: the Seafood Combo. The platter came packed with a variety of seafood, so I didn't have to choose just one item:

  • Fish Fillet: Tender, flaky, and absorbed the spice marinade well.
  • Large Shrimp: Sizable, juicy, and well-seasoned.
  • Scallops & Squid: Tender with zero rubbery texture.

Everything was moist and well seasoned with spices. Usually, when I order a combination platter, there is one item that I clearly prefer over the others. Not this time—I enjoyed everything, and eating the seafood with the brown rice made the meal even better.

Is the Seafood Combo Really for One Person?

The Seafood Combo I ordered was meant for one person, but honestly, I think the portion could easily be enough for two people. The seafood itself was already generous, and that's before considering everything else that came with my meal—brown rice, green salad, fresh pita bread, tahini, and olive oil.

Of course, everyone's appetite is different, but personally, I would have no problem sharing this meal.

Price & Value

I would describe Sabry’s as moderately expensive—not an affordable everyday restaurant. But seafood in New York can get expensive, and I thought the amount of food I received helped justify the price.

You're not only getting the seafood entrée; you're also receiving the salad, bread, tahini, and rice. For me, the combination of fresh-tasting seafood, generous portions, complimentary sides, and good service made the overall value reasonable. I wouldn't come here looking for the cheapest seafood in Queens; I'd come because I want a large, quality Egyptian seafood meal.

A Different Side of Egyptian Food

One thing I liked about Sabry’s is that it gave me a different experience from some of the other Middle Eastern and North African restaurants I've visited. When people think about food from this part of the world, they may immediately think about kebabs, shawarma, hummus, or grilled meats. Sabry’s puts seafood right at the center of the meal.

That is also what makes it different from my experience at Moroccan Bites by Siham. I went there for Moroccan dishes and especially loved the Lamb with Prunes & Apricots, while Sabry’s is somewhere I would choose specifically when I'm craving seafood. Both gave me completely different reasons to explore more North African food around Astoria.

Is Sabry’s Good for Families and Groups?

Yes—I actually think this is one of the restaurant's key strengths. During my visit, I saw families, Middle Eastern customers, and local diners enjoying meals together. The large portions naturally make sense for sharing across the table.

Sabry’s is also 100% halal, and the restaurant has a strict no-alcohol policy (no alcohol served and no BYOB). For families or groups specifically looking for that type of environment, Sabry’s is a great fit.

What I Didn't Like

I don't really have a complaint about the food or service. My biggest issue is simply getting to the restaurant.

Taking the subway wasn't convenient for me because the walk from the R train at 46th Street was around 20–22 minutes. Driving or taking Uber/Lyft makes more sense, although parking around Steinway Street can also be difficult. It's definitely a spot where you want to plan your transportation before leaving home.

What Would I Order Next Time?

I would definitely eat at Sabry’s again, but next time I want to explore more of the Egyptian side of the menu. I'm especially interested in trying the shrimp tajine and some of their other tajine dishes. I already know I like the Seafood Combo, so instead of ordering exactly the same thing, I'd rather see what else the kitchen can do.

When I leave a restaurant already thinking about what I want to order next time, it means the first visit went really well.

What I Think & Final Verdict

If you're looking for halal Egyptian seafood in Astoria, Sabry’s Seafood is a restaurant I would highly recommend trying. It has been recommended by the MICHELIN Guide, but what matters more to me is what actually arrived at my table—and I was impressed.

The Seafood Combo came loaded with fish fillet, large shrimp, scallops, and squid. Add the fresh pita, creamy tahini, green salad, olive oil, and brown rice, and this becomes a very filling, satisfying meal. It's moderately expensive and getting there without a car isn't particularly convenient, but neither of those things would stop me from returning.
