Quick Summary

This Thai restaurant has been consistently featured in the Michelin Guide for over a decade, boasting consecutive recommendations since 2012, and has built a strong reputation for serving authentic Thai dishes. Why I Decided to Eat at Ayada

Whenever I'm visiting Chelsea Market, I always like finding a place where I can sit down and enjoy a proper meal after walking around. There are plenty of places to grab a quick snack, but sometimes you just want a full dinner before heading home. That's how I ended up at Ayada.

Ayada's impressive wall of consecutive Michelin Guide recommendations spanning over a decade.

I also wanted to see if this restaurant still lived up to the massive reputation built by its long streak of Michelin Guide recognition. After looking through the menu, we decided to order four different dishes so we could try a little bit of everything.

A Peaceful Spot Inside Chelsea Market

Chelsea Market is usually busy. There are people everywhere, long lines, and lots of noise. That's why I was surprised when I walked into Ayada. Even though the restaurant is technically inside the market, it feels much calmer than the rest of the building.

A peaceful, spacious, and cozy escape away from the busy market crowd.

The dining room is spacious, cozy, and has a simple but elegant design. It almost feels like a small escape from the chaotic market outside. I think that's one of the things I liked the most. Whether you're visiting with family, meeting friends, or simply taking a break after shopping, the space feels comfortable enough to actually sit down and relax.

Service

The service was good, but I wouldn't say it was the best I've experienced. The staff were polite, and we received everything we ordered without any problems. Since the restaurant was busy, I didn't expect a lot of personal attention, and honestly, that didn't bother me. Overall, the service was perfectly fine and didn't take away from the experience.

How to Get There

Ayada is located inside Chelsea Market at: 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011

Getting here is incredibly easy by subway. Take either the E Train to 14 Street Station or the L Train to 14 Street / 8 Avenue Station. From either platform, it's only about an 8-minute walk to the entrance. If you're driving, keep in mind that Chelsea Market doesn't have its own parking lot, so you'll need to find street parking or budget for a nearby parking garage.

Shrimp Pad Thai

The first dish we ordered was the Shrimp Pad Thai. Pad Thai is probably the most well-known Thai noodle dish, so I was curious to see how Ayada's version compared to other spots around the city. One thing I noticed right away was the sauce. The noodles weren't dry at all. Instead, they were perfectly coated in a rich, savory sauce that gave every bite plenty of flavor. The shrimp were well-cooked, and everything came together nicely without feeling too heavy. This was definitely one of my favorite dishes of the meal. If you're visiting Ayada for the first time, the Pad Thai is an incredibly safe and satisfying choice.

The Star of the Show: Pineapple Duck Curry

If I had to choose just one dish from everything we ordered, it would easily be the Pineapple Duck Curry. Honestly, this single dish was the reason I left the restaurant completely impressed. The curry had a beautifully balanced, mild level of spice, making it enjoyable even if you don't usually eat very spicy food. The duck itself was incredibly tender, while the chunks of sweet pineapple and juicy lychees added a bright sweetness that cut through the rich coconut curry base perfectly.

I wasn't entirely sure how the fruit would pair with the savory meat, but it worked much better than I expected. If you appreciate these types of complex, sweet-and-savory Southeast Asian flavor combinations, it features a similar balance to what you'll find in the comforting noodle soups and chicken curries at Taste Good Malaysian Cuisine in Elmhurst. Every spoonful at Ayada had a little bit of everything, and the flavors blended together flawlessly. This is one of those signature dishes that I would happily come back for.

Seafood Fried Rice

Next up, we tried the Seafood Fried Rice. This is one of those dishes that may look simple on paper, but it's something I always enjoy ordering at Thai restaurants to test the kitchen's technique. The rice had a great, distinct texture and wasn't oily at all, which I highly appreciated. It was packed with a generous amount of seafood, ensuring every single bite had plenty of flavor.

When it came to the actual flavor profile, the texture and seasoning tasted very similar to the excellent shrimp fried rice at Pulau Pinang in Elmhurst. It delivers that same satisfying, high-heat wok execution. Even though it wasn't my absolute favorite plate of the night, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're eating with family or a group of friends, this is a great dish to share because the portion size is incredibly generous.

Calamari

The last dish to hit the table was the Calamari, which came served alongside a sweet and spicy dipping sauce. The calamari itself was executed well and didn't turn out chewy or rubbery. The accompanying sauce added a nice balance of sweetness and a hint of heat to the plate.

Even though I liked it, this was probably my least favorite dish of the meal. The reason isn't because it was bad; it's simply because I've had better versions elsewhere in the city. For example, the calamari at Romeo's Italian Restaurant definitely tasted betterโ€”it had a much crispier, light coating and packed a bit more flavor right out of the kitchen. That doesn't mean Ayada's version isn't worth ordering, but compared to the stellar curry and noodles we had, it just wasn't the standout.

Is Ayada Worth the Price?

Our final total came out to $116.50, excluding tax and tip. I would describe Ayada as moderately expensive, which is entirely fair for the area. It's certainly not the cheapest Thai restaurant in New York City, but I also don't think it's overpriced for the quality you receive. The portions are satisfyingly large, the ingredients taste fresh, and the execution matches what you'd expect from a kitchen recognized by the Michelin Guide. Considering the prime location inside Chelsea Market, the price tag makes perfect sense. If you're already spending the day exploring the area, it's a great spot to sit down for a real meal.

Would I Come Back?

Definitely. I really enjoy Thai food, so coming back wouldn't be a difficult decision at all. The funny thing is that Ayada also operates its original, flagship location in Elmhurst, Queens, which is actually much closer to where I live. Next time I'm craving that Pineapple Duck Curry, I'll probably visit that location instead to see how it compares. Either way, that curry is easily my favorite dish of the entire experience and a mandatory re-order.

Who Should Visit Ayada?

I think Ayada is a versatile fit for almost everyone. If you're visiting Chelsea Market, itโ€™s a great place to stop for lunch or dinner after spending a few hours exploring the local shops. It's also an excellent choice for families or groups because the seating area is surprisingly spacious, and the expansive menu has something for everyone. Plus, I love that you can completely customize how spicy you want your food. Whether you prefer entirely mild dishes or want authentic, fiery Thai heat, the kitchen can adjust to match your exact speed.

Final Verdict

I really enjoyed my dinner at Ayada. The restaurant offers a comfortable, calm atmosphere, generous portions, and authentic flavors that live up to the Michelin hype. The Shrimp Pad Thai was excellent, but the Pineapple Duck Curry completely stole the show. The combination of tender duck, sweet pineapple, lychees, and mild curry creates one of the best Thai dishes I've had in Manhattan lately. While the calamari was good, it wasn't nearly as memorable as the rest of the main courses. If you're planning a trip to Chelsea Market and want something more substantial than a quick market snack, Ayada is easily one of the best places to sit down for a meal.
