Looking for Affordable Mexican Food in Jackson Heights?
Whenever I'm craving Mexican food in Queens, Jackson Heights is always one of the first neighborhoods that comes to mind. Roosevelt Avenue is filled with Latin American restaurants, food carts, and taquerias, giving you plenty of choices no matter what you're craving. It's home to some incredible spots, from legendary taco trucks like Birria-Landia to great sit-down spots.
For this visit, I decided to stop by Homemade Taqueria, a restaurant known for serving authentic Mexican food at affordable prices. Unlike some sit-down Mexican restaurants, Homemade Taqueria focuses on simple, traditional dishes without trying to be overly fancy.
One thing I like is that they have multiple branches throughout New York City, making it easy to visit whichever location is closest to you. The branch I visited is located at 7505 Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights, one of the busiest food destinations in Queens.
After finishing my meal, I completely understood why this restaurant remains popular with locals. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the prices were much more reasonable than many nearby Mexican restaurants.
A Simple Restaurant That Focuses on the Food

If you're expecting a stylish restaurant with modern decorations and Instagram-worthy interiors, Homemade Taqueria probably isn't the place. The dining area is simple and practical. The décor didn't particularly stand out to me, but it still felt clean and pleasant. Throughout the meal, traditional Mexican music played in the background, creating a relaxed atmosphere without feeling too loud.
This isn't the kind of restaurant you visit because of luxury. You come here because you want authentic Mexican food without spending too much money.

The restaurant stayed packed throughout my entire visit. There was a steady flow of customers coming in, which explains why the service wasn't as attentive as some higher-end restaurants. The staff were working hard, but because the restaurant was crowded, I would describe the service as average rather than exceptional. That being said, nothing about the service negatively affected my overall experience.
Getting to Homemade Taqueria
One reason I enjoy exploring restaurants in Jackson Heights is how easy they are to reach using public transportation. To get here, simply take the E, F, M, R, or 7 train and get off at the Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue Station. From the station, it's only about a five-minute walk to the restaurant.
If you're driving, keep in mind that parking around Roosevelt Avenue can be difficult. Like many parts of Jackson Heights, the streets become very busy throughout the day, and finding street parking may require some patience. Personally, I think taking the subway is the easiest option.
Complimentary Sauces That Add More Flavor
Before the food arrived, I noticed that Homemade Taqueria offers three different sauces that diners can enjoy with their meal:
- Guacamole sauce
- Green sauce (Salsa Verde)
- Hot sauce

I always appreciate restaurants that let customers customize the level of flavor and spice in their meals. Whether you enjoy something creamy like guacamole or prefer a spicy kick from the hot sauce, having multiple choices makes the dining experience much more enjoyable.
Chicken Enchiladas: My Favorite Dish

Out of everything I ordered, the Chicken Enchiladas ended up being my favorite. The dish comes with three soft corn tortillas filled with shredded chicken and a blend of Mexican and Monterey Jack cheese. They are then topped with chopped cilantro, onions, sour cream, Cotija cheese, and your choice of sauce.
I decided to order the red tomato sauce, and I'm really glad I did. The vibrant tomato base completely won me over, tasting rich, slightly tangy, and pairing beautifully with the tender chicken and melted cheese. The enchiladas were also served with rice and beans, making the meal filling enough for lunch or dinner.
One thing I especially liked was how balanced everything tasted. The tomato sauce added freshness without overpowering the chicken, while the rice and beans completed the meal perfectly. If I ever come back—and I definitely plan to—I would order these enchiladas again without hesitation. Although I know many people enjoy mole sauce, I personally preferred this tomato-based version much more for my taste.
Chicken Burrito: Filling and Great for Sharing

The second dish I ordered was the Chicken Burrito, and it definitely lived up to its generous reputation. The burrito was filled with Mexican rice, pinto beans, lettuce, Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream, and Homemade Taqueria's salsa roja, all wrapped inside a warm flour tortilla. On the side, it came with fresh salsa and tortilla chips, giving the meal a nice combination of textures.
What I liked most about the burrito was how balanced it tasted. Every bite had a little bit of everything—the seasoned chicken, creamy sour cream, fresh lettuce, beans, and rice all worked together without one ingredient overpowering another.
It's also a very filling meal. If you're someone with a big appetite, this is definitely worth considering. Personally, I thought it was one of those dishes that leaves you completely satisfied afterward. Although my favorite dish was still the enchiladas, I would happily order the burrito again on my next visit.
Chicken Tacos: Fresh, Simple, and Authentic

No visit to a Mexican restaurant would feel complete without trying tacos. For this meal, I ordered the Chicken Tacos, which were served in traditional corn tortillas and topped with fresh cilantro, chopped onions, lime wedges, and radish.
I like that Homemade Taqueria keeps their tacos simple. Instead of loading them with unnecessary toppings, they let the seasoned chicken take center stage. Adding fresh lime before eating brought everything together and gave the tacos a brighter flavor. The tacos were delicious, fresh, and satisfying.
However, since I recently reviewed Laly's Restaurant, I couldn't help comparing the two. Personally, I still think the tacos at Laly's tasted a little better and had a nicer presentation. That doesn't mean Homemade Taqueria's tacos weren't good—they absolutely were—but if I had to choose between the two, I'd probably give a slight edge to Laly's. Even so, Homemade Taqueria makes up for it with its more affordable prices and generous portions, making it an excellent value overall.
Affordable Mexican Food Without Sacrificing Portions
One thing I appreciated about Homemade Taqueria was the value. While I don't remember the exact amount spent, I do remember it being noticeably cheaper than Laly's Restaurant, even though both restaurants are located in the same neighborhood. Considering the portion sizes, I thought Homemade Taqueria offered very good value for money.
This is the type of restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Mexican food without feeling like you've overspent. That affordability is probably one of the reasons why the restaurant remains so busy throughout the day. It's popular with locals, families, students, and anyone looking for a satisfying meal that doesn't cost too much.
Why Homemade Taqueria Continues to Be Popular
Restaurants don't usually expand into multiple locations unless they're doing something right. Homemade Taqueria now has several branches throughout New York City, and after eating here, it's easy to understand why. The restaurant concentrates on unfussy, traditional staples that favor flavor over presentation, highlighting what matters most:
- Authentic Mexican recipes
- Affordable prices
- Generous portions
- Convenient locations
- Consistent quality
It isn't trying to become an upscale dining destination. Instead, it concentrates on serving comforting Mexican food that people can enjoy regularly. Sometimes that's exactly what diners are looking for.
Who Should Visit Homemade Taqueria?
I think Homemade Taqueria is a great choice for:
- Families looking for affordable Mexican food.
- Friends meeting for lunch or dinner.
- Tourists exploring Jackson Heights.
- Anyone craving authentic Mexican comfort food.
- People who prefer generous portions without spending too much.
If you're expecting a fine dining experience or premium service, this probably isn't the restaurant for you. The atmosphere is simple, the restaurant stays busy, and the service can feel a little rushed during peak hours. But if your priority is good food at a reasonable price, I think you'll leave satisfied.
Would I Come Back?
Yes, absolutely. One of the biggest reasons is the value. Compared to many Mexican restaurants in the area, Homemade Taqueria offers generous portions at affordable prices. Even though the service wasn't quite as attentive as Laly's Restaurant, I still enjoyed my overall experience because the food itself was consistently good.
Next time, I'd definitely order the Chicken Enchiladas again since they were my favorite dish of the meal. I'd also like to explore more of their menu and try some of their other traditional Mexican specialties because Homemade Taqueria offers far more than just tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. Having multiple locations around New York City also makes it convenient to return whenever I'm craving Mexican food.
Final Verdict
Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to Homemade Taqueria. The restaurant may not have the most impressive ambiance, and the service can be average when it's busy, but I don't think those things take away from what really matters. The food was authentic, the portions were generous, and the prices were affordable.
The Chicken Enchiladas stood out as my favorite because of the rich tomato sauce and satisfying combination of cheese, chicken, rice, and beans. The Chicken Burrito was filling and packed with flavor, while the Chicken Tacos were fresh, simple, and enjoyable. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Jackson Heights without spending too much money, Homemade Taqueria is definitely worth adding to your list.
