I had dinner at Jackson Diner Indian Cuisine in Jackson Heights, Queens, and I was honestly excited to try it. This restaurant has been open since 1983, meaning it has been around for over forty years. When a place survives in New York for that many decades, I always get curious. It usually means they have a rock-solid reputation and a loyal customer base.

Jackson Heights is already one of my favorite neighborhoods in Queens when I’m craving South Asian food. There are so many Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepali, and Pakistani restaurants in the area, so there’s always something good to eat. But because there are so many options, a restaurant really has to stand out in order for me to recommend it. That’s why I wanted to see if Jackson Diner was truly worth the hype.

During my visit, I ordered a mix of appetizers, main dishes, bread, and a traditional drink to get a complete picture of their kitchen. Overall, it was a highly enjoyable meal, and a couple of the dishes completely stole the show.

What We Ordered

For this meal, the table was loaded with:

  • Complimentary Papadum with Chutneys
  • Crispy Fried Okra
  • Samosa Chaat
  • Chicken Biryani
  • Chicken Tikka Masala
  • Butter Naan
  • Mango Lassi

It ended up being a incredibly filling spread with a great variety of textures. While a few items outshone the others, the core of the meal packed a wonderful punch.

Complimentary Papadum with Chutneys

Before our ordered appetizers arrived, the staff served us complimentary Indian crackers called papadum. It came with three classic sides: a green chutney, a sweet tamarind sauce, and a red pickle.

The papadum itself was pretty standard—just a light, crispy cracker that didn't have much flavor on its own. It wasn't the star of the show, but I always appreciate a free starter to snack on while waiting for the mains. The real lifesavers here were the chutneys. Dipping the crispy pieces into the sweet tamarind and bright green sauce gave it a great kick and made it a fun way to start the evening.

Crispy Fried Okra

A plate of crispy golden-brown fried okra seasoned with fresh cilantro, diced raw onions, and chopped tomatoes.

For our official appetizer, I ordered the crispy fried okra. I was really looking forward to this because I love okra, especially when a kitchen can give it a really good crunch.

Texture-wise, they absolutely nailed it—the crunch was fantastic. But flavor-wise? It fell completely flat. The okra itself didn't seem to have any seasoning, so it relied heavily on the dipping sauce to carry it. It wasn't a bad dish, but compared to the rest of our meal, it was underwhelming. Because everything else we ordered was so bold, this one just didn't stand out, and I don't think it's something I would order again.

Samosa Chaat: A Delightful Surprise

A close-up view of a colorful bowl of Samosa Chaat at Jackson Diner, layered with creamy white yogurt, chickpea curry, diced raw onions, chopped tomatoes, and fresh cilantro.

The samosa chaat was one of those dishes that completely surprised me in the best way possible. It features crisp samosas buried under a mountain of cool yogurt and savory chickpea curry.

The presentation looked beautiful the second it hit the table. It had a colorful, layered look that made it instantly exciting to dive into. Once I took a bite, I liked it even more. The flavor profile was rich, mildly spicy, and deeply satisfying. I loved how the cool, creamy yogurt cut through the warmth of the savory chickpea curry, while the samosas underneath gave it a great crunch. When you mix everything together, it creates a perfect balance of textures and temperatures. If you love Indian chaat street snacks, this is a must-order.

Chicken Biryani: The Undisputed Star

The chicken biryani was easily my favorite dish of the entire night.

I’ve tried a lot of biryani in Jackson Heights, and I can honestly say this is one of the best chicken biryanis I’ve had on 74th Street. The basmati rice was incredibly aromatic, moist, fresh, and deeply seasoned. Every single grain of rice carried flavor, and it didn't suffer from that dry texture you find at lesser spots.

Hands down one of the best chicken biryanis you can find on 74th Street.

What really set this apart, though, was the yogurt garlic sauce they served alongside it. That sauce made a massive difference for me. It blended beautifully with the spiced rice, adding an extra layer of creaminess and bright flavor.

I also highly appreciated that they provided this sauce automatically. Some of the other neighborhood favorites I’ve reviewed, like Khalil Biryani House or Shanai Restaurant & Party Hall, don’t serve a rich side sauce with their biryanis, which I always feel is a bit of a drawback. Jackson Diner handles it perfectly, making the dish feel entirely complete. If you only order one thing here, make it this.

Chicken Tikka Masala: Pure Comfort Food

Our other standout main dish was the classic chicken tikka masala.

It was incredibly creamy, rich, and full of depth. The chicken chunks were remarkably tender and had completely absorbed the spiced tomato gravy. The masala sauce carried a mild, smooth heat that was highly comforting without being overly heavy. It is exactly the kind of velvety sauce that makes you want to keep ripping off pieces of bread just to scoop up every last drop.

It came paired with fluffy basmati rice topped with a handful of sweet peas, and the combination worked beautifully to balance out the rich curry flavors.

I know chicken tikka masala is the most common order at almost any Indian restaurant, but when a kitchen executes it with this much care, it reminds you why the dish became famous in the first place.

Butter Naan

Of course, you can't order a rich curry without a side of butter naan, and Jackson Diner delivers an amazing version.

The naan arrived warm and pillowy, featuring a slight, blistered crispiness on the outside while remaining incredibly soft and chewy on the inside. It was the ultimate vehicle for dipping into that chicken tikka masala gravy. Some restaurants serve naan that is either too thick and doughy or totally plain, but this one was just right.

Mango Lassi: The Perfect Finish

To wrap up the meal, I ordered a mango lassi.

I always love having a cold lassi after a heavy, spice-rich Indian dinner because it acts as a perfect palate cleanser. This version was smooth, thick, and creamy, with a prominent, vibrant mango and yogurt flavor. It did an excellent job of cooling things down after eating the spiced curries and biryani. It was simple, refreshing, and a great way to close out the feast.

Service and Dining Experience

The service during our dinner was excellent. The staff were highly attentive, polite, and kept the entire dining experience running smoothly from start to finish.

The restaurant itself has a wonderful, established energy. Knowing it has been a staple of Jackson Heights for decades gives it a nostalgic, welcoming history that keeps generations of locals coming back.

One important thing to keep in mind for your budget: The restaurant automatically adds an 18% gratuity (service tip) directly to the bill. It’s not an issue at all given how good the service was, but it is definitely something customers should be aware of before the check arrives.

Final Thoughts

My dinner at Jackson Diner was a massive success.

The kitchen clearly understands how to layer spices, resulting in deeply satisfying comfort food. The absolute champions of the table were the chicken biryani—thanks to that stellar yogurt garlic sauce—and the velvety chicken tikka masala paired with fresh butter naan. The samosa chaat is another highly reliable pick if you want an exciting, texturally playful appetizer. Just skip the fried okra and save that room for more rice and bread.

It is easy to see how Jackson Diner has dominated 74th Street since 1983. If you want great service, fantastic biryani, and a comfortable sit-down meal in Queens, this spot absolutely earns my recommendation.

Would I Come Back?

Without a doubt. I would gladly return just to re-order the chicken biryani, chicken tikka masala, and butter naan. Those three items made a lasting impression and are well worth a trip back to the neighborhood.
